🧹 What I’m Decluttering Before the New Year

by The Everyday Edit

1. Old Papers & Expired Documents 📄🗃️

From receipts and manuals to expired coupons and random printouts—I’m clearing out my paper clutter. I scan anything important and shred the rest. This makes space for a fresh planner and reduces mental load instantly.

2. Closet & Drawers 👗🧦

If I didn’t wear it this year, it’s going. I’m pulling everything out—coats, jeans, pajamas—and asking: Do I love this? Do I reach for it? I donate gently used pieces and repurpose old tees as cleaning rags. The result: space and clarity.

3. Skincare & Makeup 🧴💄

Beauty products have a shelf life! I’m tossing anything that’s expired, smells off, or hasn’t been touched in months. Then I clean makeup brushes and wipe down drawers. It’s a small ritual that feels so refreshing.

4. Pantry & Fridge 🍲🧃

Before the new year, I do a deep clean of the pantry and fridge. Out go the stale chips and those sauces I never used. I wipe everything down and stock only what we’ll actually use. Bonus: I can see what I already have before restocking.

5. Tech & Digital Clutter 💻📱

From duplicate photos to apps I don’t use, I’m tidying up my digital life. I clean my desktop, organize folders, and delete old emails. My phone feels 10x faster, and I can actually find things again.

6. Toys, Books, & Games 🎲📚

For the kids, I declutter toys that are broken or outgrown, and donate books we’ve outgrown. We keep what we love and use, and pass on the rest to another family who can enjoy them.

7. Holiday Decor & Storage 🕯️🎁

As I pack up holiday decorations, I check each item: Did it get used this year? Is it in good shape? I donate the extras and store only what truly sparks joy. It makes decorating next year so much simpler.

8. Mental Clutter 🧠💭

Not everything I declutter is physical. I do a year-end journal session to release old goals, to-do lists, and lingering guilt. I write out what I’m letting go of, then tear up the page. It’s symbolic, but incredibly freeing.
