✨ Building a Skincare Routine from Scratch
Simple steps to care for your skin — without the overwhelm.
Whether you’re starting fresh, resetting after a rough patch, or just tired of half-used products that don’t make sense, building a skincare routine from scratch can feel intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be.
At The Everyday Edit, we believe skincare should be simple, soothing, and sustainable — no 10-step routines required. Here’s how I built mine (and how you can too) from the ground up.
🧼 Step 1: Start with the Basics (3 Steps)
A good beginner routine includes:
Cleanser – Removes dirt, oil, makeup
Moisturizer – Keeps your skin hydrated and protected
Sunscreen (AM only) – Shields your skin from UV damage daily
That’s it. These three steps create a healthy foundation — everything else is optional.
🧴 Step 2: Choose Gentle Products
Look for products labeled:
“Fragrance-free” or “non-comedogenic”
Suited to your skin type: dry, oily, combo, or sensitive
With short ingredient lists (less chance of irritation)
💡 Tip: Start with drugstore brands or travel sizes until you know what works.
🌙 Step 3: Build an AM + PM Rhythm
Morning Routine:
Cleanse (or splash with water)
Moisturize
SPF 30+
Evening Routine:
Cleanse
Moisturize
Optional: facial oil or calming serum
Keep it consistent for 2–4 weeks before adding more.
🧪 Step 4: Add One Targeted Product at a Time
If you want to address specific skin concerns (like acne, dullness, or fine lines), slowly add:
Exfoliants (1–2x a week): like BHA, AHA, or enzyme masks
Serums: vitamin C (AM), niacinamide (anytime), or retinol (PM only)
Introduce just one new product at a time to see how your skin responds.
🧠 Step 5: Listen to Your Skin
Your skin’s needs will change with:
Seasons
Hormones
Stress levels
Diet and hydration
Adjust your routine gently, and don’t panic over every breakout. Progress > perfection.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a shelf full of serums or the latest trend to feel confident in your skin.
A simple, consistent routine — built on intention and care — is more than enough.
